Demon Blues

This piece features extensive use of the interval of the tritone, the diabolus in musica. Composed for Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Trumpet and pre-recorded sounds, Demon Blues is written to reflect what one might hear upon walking into a jazz club in Hell. Some of the pre-recorded sounds are synthesized, some are recorded live, and some are sampled. I began writing this piece during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Anyone who watched a World Cup match is surely familiar with the plastic trumpet known as the vuvuzela, a true instrument of the devil. The beehive-like drone of thousands of vuvuzelas can occasionally be heard the background.
